OPINION: Essentials of Learning Evaluation
I believe that evaluating learning is crucial for ensuring that resources are being used effectively and efficiently, and failure to do so can result in wasted time, money, and effort with little to no impact on the organisation's performance.
Here’s a brief description of the Learning Evaluation Models and Methods described in the book:
🌟 Kirkpatrick's Four Levels of Evaluation: This model is used to evaluate training effectiveness across four levels - reaction, learning, behaviour and results.
🌟 Kaufman's Five Levels of Evaluation: Kaufman's model adds an additional level to Kirkpatrick's, which is societal impact - this model considers the broader social impact of training.
🌟 Brinkerhoff Success Case Method: This approach involves identifying and studying the most successful cases of training, in order to understand and replicate what worked well.
🌟 Anderson's Value of Learning: Anderson's model focuses on the value of learning itself, rather than just measuring the effectiveness of training - it includes both tangible and intangible benefits.
🌟 Phillips' ROI Model: This model measures the return on investment of training, by comparing the costs of training to the monetary benefits it produces.
🌟 Watershed’s Seven Steps of Evaluation involves defining success criteria, aligning evaluation methods, designing data collection, collecting data, analysing data, reporting and acting upon results, and finally, sharing and improving upon the findings.
“Remember, your evaluation metrics will vary depending on your organization’s attitude to learning.“
